Homework 2
1. How is the landing gear extended and retracted (use the terms
reversible hydraulic pump, hydraulic actuators, and down locks in
your answer)?
First the pilot select up/down position. Then, there is electrical motor rotates the
hydraulic pump which send the fluid to the three actuators and The hydraulic fluid
moves the piston in the actuators in order to move the push rods and there is down-
over center lock that is mechanically supported by a spring and a finger hook to lock
the landing gear in down position. In retracting, the pressure push's the piston to up
position and it is only supported by the pressure of the hydraulic fluid .
2. How is the landing gear locked in the up position? What happens if
we have a leak that drains all of the hydraulic fluid in the system?
The landing gear locked in up position by the hydraulic fluid pressure only. The
landing gear will fall since no pressure is holding it.
3. How is accidental gear retraction prevented while the aircraft is on
the ground?
There is a weight sensor which prevent the accidental gear retraction on
ground.
4. There are two types of fixed-pitch propellers: climb pitch and cruise
pitch. Compare and contrast these two types of propellers.
Climb pitch has a lower pitch angle therefore it has less drag that will lead to
high engine RPM and more horsepower. These are advantages in take-offs
but disadvantaged in cruise. This type is usually good at short runways with
obstacles.
Crouse pitch has higher pitch angle therefore it has more drag that will lead to
lower engine RPM and less horsepower. These are advantages in cruise
because of the increase in efficiency but disadvantages in take-offs. This type
is good in medium-length flights.
All in all, Fixed pitch prop are usually compromised between the two types of
pitches with slightly different in what settings is needed.
5. What is a propeller governor and how does the propeller control
lever impact the governor?
