Description
In my third year of study at college, I got placement for attachment at the general ward to research
a particular drug. Frankly, I was uncertain about the drug despite illustrations by my mentor.
Within no time, as I was on the way to research about the drug, a health assistant approached me
to help him deal with another patient lying in a stained bed, groaning in pain. Therefore, I decided
to prioritize this as learning, the study was not urgent, and I could look for the drug any other time
and perform research. Finishing on this, my mentor came around, asking whether I had looked for
the drug. I revealed what had happened, but my mentor kept insisting that I check and improve my
time management.
Meanwhile, this was because I had not looked for the drug at the right time he told me to do. He
explained that when I became a registered nurse, I need to know more about the drugs. As a result,
the situation popped many questions on a priority, as the patients need my profession and
development (Kim, 2018).
Feelings
My decision to help and assist the health care assistant to have the patient contented is what I felt
was precedence than looking for research drugs. I also vividly recall discerning I could even do
this at home if the ward were eventful. I was a bit aggravated or disguised by not talking to my
advisor to help the patient. For instance, my deep concern was on patient comfort, and I felt I could
not leave the patient in that condition and go looking for a drug, which could be done later.
Justification of decisions is something nurses should be able to do. Being advised by my mentor
to improve on my time management skills confused me a bit. The incident made me feel as though
I needed to learn time management skills and crucially. I could attend my shifts on time and able
to plan my workload.
