QUESTION
Discuss the use of webcams in construction supervision and management.
ANSWER
Construction supervision and management is critical to construction quality control. It not only
helps minimize human error and construction defects, but also ensure that specifications are
adhered to throughout the construction process. Cost-effective ways of construction site-
monitoring systems are being used and the current system is with webcams.
A webcam is a video camera that feeds its image in real-time to or through a computer-to-computer
network. With the advancement of technology, webcams are able to feed their images to the web
and be accessed by any viewer or can be restricted. Now mobile devices like phones can be used
as their video and audio streaming quality continues to improve and are more portable than
computers. Webcams were mostly used in security surveillance and recording social videos but
now are being integrated in monitoring of different projects.
ADVANTAGES OF THE USE OF WEBCAMS ON SITE
The introduction of webcams in large and remote construction projects has brought about several
changes, some of which are:
Saving on costs, on large projects, several people may be involved in the supervision of a
construction activity and if they would require transportation to and from the construction
sites, project costs would be increased. The use of a webcam can save on costs as the works
on site can be broadcasted to the consultants in real-time.
Time management is also improved. If challenges are encountered on the site, it would
require the consultant to visit the works and give advice where possible and while waiting
for their arrival, work is put on hold. Therefore, using a webcam, the contractor can stream
a video to the consultant, get an immediate response, and save on time.
Large construction sites have many works being carried out simultaneously, of which
monitoring of all of them would be difficult and can be done using webcams
