Ethics involves the study of moral obligation. Ethics helps set a high-quality standard
when dealing with employees and managing production. This essay provides insights into social
responsibility and ethics. Specifically, it describes the sources of unethical decisions and
behaviour, describes the commonly found ethical violations and temptations, the meaning of
corporate social responsibility, and a whistleblower.
Unethical Decisions and Behavior Sources
Unethical decisions and behavior arise because of individual characteristics, moral issues
facing an individual and organizational environment.
Under individual characteristics, self-interest is a critical factor that influences ethics. It
always manifests as greed and the need to gain a maximum advantage at the expense of others.
Individuals with desire will manipulate others for their gains and can blame others for their own
mistakes. For example, an unethical behavior arising from such is when a person claims that
another colleague was responsible for losses because of negligence that they committed and not
the other person. Another individual characteristic that leads to unethical behavior is unconscious
biases that result in unjust actions towards others. Such unconscious biases are always different
from our consciously held beliefs (Dubrin et al., 2017). Thus, faulty judgments create ethical
issues that interfere when recruiting or retaining valuable staff members. For example, when a
manager stereotypes that women cannot do mechanical jobs, there is a high probability of being
unjustly excluded from the position. And if the female candidate is equally or better suited and
qualified than a male candidate, then the recruiting individual is behaving unethically.
Rationalization is also another source of unethical behavior. It is a mental strategy that
enables individuals to justify their corrupt deeds. An individual can dismiss the magnitude of an
ethical act by observing if others in similar positions are doing the same (Dubrin et al., 2017).
