RESPONSES 2
MS 322 Response 8
Response 1:
At what point does violence against women become an act of terrorism? What are
the parameters of terrorism against women?
The point where violence against women becomes an act of terrorism is when the
target is preferably female in the attack on a town or city. Like in Bosnia when they took over
that camp of people and where only targeting women then they would kidnap them and hold
them hostage. They would abduct the women and hold them in rape camps or rape hotels and
assault the over long periods of time in those camps. This is presumed as a war crime and
could be used as terrorism. Terrorism is the unlawful use of violence and intimidation on
civilians, so I mean that’s defiantly unlawful use of violence on a woman if they do that to
them. The parameters all I could find in the book is like attacking women for the terrorist is
to include ethnic cleaning campaigns. Also, to remove an enemy from the group they are
attacking and also attacking enemy women as symbols of cultural identity. There cultural
identity is really big in other countries. Violence on women is more involved with the
insurgents or paramilitaries that group usually does more of the dirty work for the terrorist
groups.
Violence against women becomes an act of terrorism when extremist organizations engage in
widespread abuses against women and girls. Moreover, these organizations tap the strategic and
tactical potential of female extremists. For many years, women have been participants in terrorist
activities and this continues to be the case. In my view Treatment of women by violent extremist
groups underscores the urgency for gender-informed strategies to counter violent extremism.
There is therefore the need to understand and acknowledge violence against women as a
barometer for societal stability and health. The presence of terrorism against women therefore
predicts as well as drives further impunity, insecurity and injustice.
Response 2:
I think the systematic violence against women has historically been treated as
more of a "war crime" then terrorism due to more of misinterpretation of the
full scope of terrorism. Rape was not even considered a war crime officially
until the mid 1990s, while the United Nations were investigating war crimes
committed by the Balkans. I think during the more recent events of this, like
those in Afghanistan, Bosnia, and others in the 1990s, the public was very
