The drug-free communities support program is governed by the Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Substance abuse disorders has been a
problem in most communities with a majority of the youth being alcohol or drug addicts. This
program was posted on grants on January 16th, 2015, with the application date being March
18th, 2015. The anti-drug program provides the community with grants of up to $100,000 and
educates the community on the effects of alcohol, illicit drugs, and tobacco abuse. This program
takes into consideration different elements of the community such as the youth, parents, media,
school officials, fraternal organizations, faith-based organizations, and healthcare professionals
in devising ways and methods on how to curb drug abuse among the youth.
Working with the community as a strategy in addressing this problem proves effective
based on various reasons. For instance, the community can identify interventions that work and
help influence the program positively. Secondly, the community can provide information and
statistics necessary for the program. The program was created with two main goals; to establish
and strengthen the collaboration among communities, the federal and state government, and
public and private non-profit agencies and reducing substance abuse among the youth before
delving deeper and addressing this issue in adults.
Over time, the program has achieved its outcomes. For instance, the rate of substance
abuse disorder in the community decreased significantly. The youth got educated on the effects
of substance abuse disorder, which affected the adults as they learned and understood some
things based on this program. Secondly, the community is brought much closer to the various
departments working together. The departments are united in addressing the issue of substance
