Characteristics of Expository Essays
After reading the essays required for this assignment I came up with these conclusions.
Both essays are written in the form of explaining how to do something or how to achieve a
desired outcome. They are both also explaining only one topic not several, keeping it simple but
detailed enough so we the readers can understand what is being explained.
The informative process used for the essay ‘Setting the Table’ was done by creating a list
of detailed ideas of how to accomplish this. Then each numbered detail is separated by one space
allowing the reader the chance to digest the information read before continuing on. For the essay
‘How to clean a fish’ the process used was a little different. The author broke the information up
into paragraphs, allowing enough information to be relayed without over doing it and boring the
reader. In certain paragraphs the author also uses what I consider to be pictographs, actually
showing where to cut a fish so one does not get confused. This one is separated by one space
between each paragraph, allowing the reader a short break between each descriptive paragraph.
In my opinion the author of ‘Setting the Table’ used this format to be able to better
explain each item on their list. Leaving nothing out was made easier because of this list, if the
author forgot something all they needed to do was reread the list and find out what was left out.
The author used spaces between each item in the attempt to allow the reader to identify each
instruction separately, not running them together and confusing the reader. The author of ‘How to
clean a fish’ used the paragraphs in order to be able to fit all the information needed. By doing
this they were able to fit all the details one needs to achieve this type of job. Also by using the
pictographs it helps create a better overall picture. By adding a space between each paragraph it
allows the reader a quick break in order to process the information better.
