Chapter 6 Key Concept 3.8 The Constitutional Convention and Debates over Ratification Who were the nationalists and what did they believe in regards to the Articles? Nationalists were individuals who wanted to revise the Articles and were supporters of the Constitutional Convention and as well as for the Constitution. Some even wanted to draft an entirely new document. These people included diplomats, army officers, and members of Congress who were used to working with people for different states. included James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, etc. They believed that the Articles of Confederation were inadequate and produced a weak national government. Nationalists believed that a centralization of government authority was needed, as the Articles of Confederation failed to keep control of the people, such as in Shay’s Rebellion. They distrusted the government and feared that officials would seize every opportunity to abuse their powers. Therefore, they wanted a new constitution to be based on a system of checks and balances so that the power of each branch would be balanced by the powers of the others and also wanted to replace the Articles of Confederation as they believed they needed new order and structure to the federal government.
