What is the religious significance of the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, Japan? Why has it become a
controversial topic in the past few decades? Identify some of the critiques and defenses put forth
by each side of the debate. Where do you stand on this issue?
After World War II, the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo was established to remember fallen soldiers
in Japan. The Shinto faith was strongly aligned with the Japanese government during this period.
Because of the derogatory connotation, certain people equate with the temple. It has become a
private institution. Many people believe that honoring people who performed intolerable offenses
is disrespectful because of past war crimes such as rape and murder committed by many
anonymous troops. From WWII to the present, Japan has severed its links with Shintoism,
leaving the private organization to depend on the donations of all who think the monument
conveys a message of gratitude to the country's soldiers. Since abuse and murder are
unacceptable, and often people are harmed by the chaos and criminality, there may be a
compelling excuse to object to the law. Others believe that since the monument was built to
honor their troops, it was never meant to spread the notion that each soldier was a hero, simply
that they died in battle. I believe the Yasukuni Shrine is a historical monument that reflects
patriotism while bearing in mind that, while these persons played a major role during the battle,
they are not heroes. Their involvement in the war does not make them decent citizens.
