FORMULATION OF A PICOT QUESTION 2
Population
This evidence-based project targets a group of older people over the age of 65 years
suffering from long-term pains, irrespective of their sex, race, and ethnicity. Most individuals
above 65 are at higher risk of enduring chronic pains due to musculoskeletal disorders like the
degenerative spine and arthritic conditions (Ericsson et al., 2002). Additionally, other diseases
like cancer, cystitis, gout, and pressure ulcers can be linked to chronic pains for people above 65
years.
Intervention
Long-term pain is associated with reduced mobility, depression, anxiety, isolation, and
sleep impairment. There are various pain management medications. Most patients above 65 years
need opioid therapy. This type of treatment would minimize their pains and improve their
bodies’ functionalities. Additionally, an opioid therapy would be helpful because many of these
patients have coexisting conditions and severe disorders.
Comparison
Opioid prescriptions may increase the chances of medication misuse and abuse, leading
to opioid misuse disorder. This can necessitate a change of treatment. Various non-opioids
medications can be prescribed to treat long-term chronic pains. The best alternative to this plan
for patients above 65 years would be physical therapies. This therapy specializes in physical
medicine and rehabilitation, where a physical therapist creates an exercise program that would
help the patients improve their abilities to function and decrease their pains (Chou et al., 2015).
Whirlpools, ultrasound as well as deep-muscle massages may also assist these patients.
