Explication of Arlington’s Richard Cory
Carlos William’s The Widow ‘s Laments in Springtime is a poem that narrates the
experience of woman who has lost her husband. The woman who is the speaker narrates her
experience though symbolic images such as flowers and trees. The woman’s husband died and
now she has to live alone in world that they enjoyed together. When she looks ta the things that
she sued to enjoy, they are no longer the same. At the end of the poem, it appears that the woman
is contemplating death so that she can join her husband. It appears that theme of Williams poem
is the pain that comes with the loss of a loved one.
William’s poem begins on high note by introducing the woman’s feelings. In the first line
of the poem, the speaker says, “Sorrow is my own yard” (Line1). The statement is a metaphor
that gives many details about the woman’s feeling. Generally, a yard is an area of land that is
adjacent to a house. Often, people take care of their yards with passion. They water, mow their
yards and protect it from any kind of harm. Yard generally helps to give a house a lively feeling.
It therefore appears that the “yard” is used by the speaker to symbolize life. By saying that
sorrow her yard, the speaker simply means that her word was filled with sorrow. The pronoun
“my” in the first statement is used possessively stressing on the fact that the speaker is talking
about her own life. Although the speaker makes it clear that she is feeling sorrowful, at this
point, the audience does not know exactly what makes her sorrowful except for the hint given by
the poems heading.

From the second to the fourth lines, the speaker gives us much information about her
yard but also gives us hint that something is happening that is unusual. For instance, in the
second and the third lines, the speaker hints that her yard has always been full of life when she
says, “Where the new grass flames as it has flamed often” (Line 2-3) However, from the fourth
to the sixth lines, the speaker raises alarm that something must be happening that is unusual from
what normally goes on in her yard when she says, “But not with the cold fire that closes round
me this year(line 4-5). The word” cold fire “as used in the cold fire further revels that there is
something unusual happening in the lady’s yard and life because generally, fire is known to hot
and having cold fire is very unusual. The speaker is also time specific when he says, “this year”
meaning that the previous years, thing have been okay. By the end of the sixth line, we get the
feeling that something is not right in the woman world though it remains unknown.
In the seventh and the eight lines, we get the first hint about what has been cause the
change in the woman’s life when she says, “Thirty-five years I lived with my husband.(line 7-
8). This statement gives us concrete evidence that the lady ‘s husband of thirty-five years died
“this year”. It is possible to tell that the lady’s husband died from the statement because of the
word “lived”. This word is in past tense showing that they no longer live together. These lines
are the official evidence that the speaker is widow and the death of her husband is the reason
why she is sorrowful.
In the ninth the tenth line, the speaker continues to use imagery to reveal more about her
situation ad feeling. For instance, she describes the palm trees as a being white and “with masses
of flowers” (Line 9-10). The blooming palm tree is an imagery of the brightness and liveliness.
However, because of the loss that the speakers used, she does not feel the liveliness rejuvenating.
