Hate crimes against Asians and Asian Americans amid Covid-19 in the U.S
There has been an increase in hate crime cases in the U.S. which targets Asians and Asian
Americans even as the country battles Covid-19 (Ruiz, Horowitz & Tamir, 2020). These crimes
have sparked fears among the Asian American community, although it is not yet clear if they are
motivated by racial hatred. The Asian communities living in the U.S. have their ancestral origin
from Asian countries such as India, Korea, China, Japan, and the Philippines. These communities
are mostly urbanized, with a high percentage of them living in metropolitan areas. States like
California and Hawaii have a very high population of Asian Americans. The Asians tend to be
conservative in that they hold on to their familial and social traditions. During the exclusion era
in the 18th century, the Asian community was discriminated against by whites and denied basic
rights such as voting. On the other hand, the whites have a culture of individualism, informality,
and capitalism. The acts of discrimination against the Asian communities have increased during
the pandemic as racial stereotype has increased and led to racial-based violence against the Asian
communities living in the U.S.
With the advent of the covid-19 pandemic, the U.S. has suffered greatly from the
pandemic's devastating effects. The U.S. citizens have suffered from health and economic
difficulties created by the pandemic. The covid-19 disease is caused by the coronavirus, which
originated from the Wuhan province in China in late 2019 (World Health Organization, 2020).
Before countries could realize the extent of the pandemic threat, the virus had spread to almost
every country in the world, including the U.S. International travel and exchange of goods were
the factors that accelerated the spread of the virus. Since the first covid-19 case was recorded in
the U.S., life has changed to a greater extent for every American. There have been economic
