Choose one (1) of the following CEOs for this assignment: Larry Page (Google), Tony Hsieh (Zappos), Gary Kelly
(Southwest Airlines), Meg Whitman (Hewlett Packard), Ursula Burns (Xerox), Terri Kelly (W.L. Gore), Ellen
Kullman (DuPont), or Bob McDonald (Procter & Gamble). Use the Internet to investigate the leadership style and
effectiveness of the selected CEO.
Write a five to six (5-6) page paper in which you:
Provide a brief (one [1] paragraph) background of the CEO.
Analyze the CEO’s leadership style and philosophy, and how the CEO’s leadership style aligns with the culture.
Examine the CEO’s personal and organizational values.
Evaluate how the values of the CEO are likely to influence ethical behavior within the organization.
Determine the CEO’s three (3) greatest strengths and three (3) greatest weaknesses.
Select the quality that you believe contributes most to this leaders success. Support your reasoning.
Assess how communication and collaboration, and power and politics influence group (i.e., the organization’s)

The young entrepreneur, computer wizard was born on 26
March, 1973 in Michigan (Seth,
2011). His parents were both experts in computer. He did his bachelors in engineering form
Michigan University and later went up to study computer engineering at Stanford University.
Here he met his partner Sergey Brin (Seth, 2011). In their research project at university, they
developed a search engine which listed desired results on the basis of popularity. This search
engine was named Google as the term means 1 followed by 100 in mathematics (Seth, 2011).
Their aim was to provide maximum information available on WWW on typing certain key word.
Soon they gathered enough money to finance their project which ultimately was launched in

1998 (Seth, 2011). Since then there has been no looking back. Google is the most popular
navigator in the entire world, with more than 250 million queries every day. The company is
located in Silicon Valley, California. The first initial public offering (IPO) was made in 2004,
which made both the partners billionaires. Currently Page is the CEO of the company. Recently
Page purchased YouTube, the most popular website for watching videos for a whopping $1.65
billion (Seth, 2011).
The stupendous growth of the company is attributed to the fantastic leadership style of Larry
Page. He has be able to to show more qualities rather than just his intelligence. His approach is
simple and clear towards his employees i.e. to be compassionate, humane, co-operative and treat
the company as family. He cares for his employees by providing gifts to new joining, free
mealtimes, free medical attention, travel assurance for employees as well as their family, legal
assistance, maternity leaves, leave for new moms and dads, gaming, gym training, pension for
dependents of any deceased employee, and many more services (Carlson, 2011). Furthermore,
Larry has been very malleable in making the products of the company available freely like
Google Docs, etc. All this shows that he is far above than just a company’s head. His style of
leading is an example for anyone who is looking out to start his own venture. Some of his
important strategies are:-
Paying close devotion to silly concepts and cultivating the best out of them- Page
always insists his employees to work upon their crazy ideas. He believes that these ideas
can only bring about any change in the world by attracting smart people which shall work
towards the success of the individual. Ideas like AdWords, and Google search engine by
Page and his team have made millions (Carlson, 2011). He believes that when no one

believes in your crazy idea then there is no scope of competition and the chances of
success are higher.
For avoiding bureaucracy, build your own team- Larry always insists on building his
own team. For many years he was involved in the hiring process at Google. Most of the
people he hired were from Stanford or Michigan who have stayed with the vision of
Larry up till now. This is because of his constant devotion to these people. This way he
has avoided any bureaucracy. Besides this, he lays off people whom he thinks are
bureaucratic. Larry hates old-style management and thus takes steps to overcome it.
Make yourself persevere as much as possible- it was Larry whose perseverance helped
in making Google’s book digitization project, Google Maps, Street views and many such
kind of products. Larry constantly tries to push his employees to follow their dreams by
sticking to it thoroughly. He continuously tries to motivate his team by giving them his
own real life examples where he remained glued to his dream or idea and that idea led to
his accomplishment.
Give importance to small actions as well- Larry insists his team to focus on small moves.
He constantly reminds his team to do R&D on all the products of the company so as add
more value to them. He is not afraid of failures. This is why he keeps getting new updates
from his team everyday on his Android. This makes things better day by day. He is also
connected with the students through colleges by teaching them to use AdWords. These
small actions are creating a new workforce as well as user base for the company which in
long term will improve the reputation of the Google all the more (Carlson, 2011).
Try to be as quick and concise as possible- Page aims at creating a working culture that
is quicker, lively and as concise as possible. He takes 60 words updates from his
employees on all the projects on which they are working (Carlson, 2011). This way he is
trying to build an atmosphere where decisions can be taken faster and with open hearts
