Positive and Negative Impacts of Freight Operations
Freight transport forms a critical part of the supply chain. The use of transportation
means such as roads, sea, rail, and air cause significant impact on the population lives. The
effects are both negative and positive. A significant positive outcome of freight transport is the
availability of products in places consumers require them and on time (Crainic et al., 2004). Rail
and road transport ensure products reach all consumers, while air transport reduces the time to
deliver goods in a given place (Golicic et al., 2010). Freight transport also provides a source of
livelihood by providing job opportunities. Freight companies offer job opportunities such as
freight attendants, pilots, drivers, distributors, and packers.
A significant setback of freight movement is the congestion that the transportation cause
(Crainic et al., 2004). If the shipment is made by air or sea transport, then its distribution will
involve road transport. The transporting vehicles use same routes as those used by people leading
to traffic jams. Another negative impact is pollution. Vehicles and aircraft emit gases that lead to
air pollution. Reducing air quality leads to health issues, including respiratory illnesses.
Moreover, vehicles cause noise pollution as sea transport may lead to oil spillage that endangers
the source of seafood for people (Crainic et al., 2004). With the efforts to adopt green freight
transportation, the sector will significantly reduce the negative impacts of freight transport
(Golicic et al., 2010). Freight companies are encouraging the production of green trucks and
alternative fuel technologies to reduce gas emissions that lead to air and sound pollution.
