Utilitarianism
Right and wrong are anchored on the outcomes of an action according to the utilitarian
philosophical perspective. These outcomes or consequences should result in the happiness of
the greatest number of people. Simply put, utilitarianism is a philosophical approach that is
committed to ensuring the wellbeing of masses by guiding decision-makers on what choices
will help in the achievement of the greatest good (Mulgan, 2019). The Covid-19 pandemic
provides an excellent example of the most contemporary application of utilitarianism. The
measures that governments and other policymakers put in place were intended to achieve the
greatest good. For instance, imposing lockdowns was arrived at after weighing the possible
consequences of letting people interact freely in the face of a highly contagious virus against
the consequences of having some people lose their livelihoods and social lives. The greater
good of the latter choice had a smaller magnitude than the greater good of the former choice,
leading to the imposition of lockdowns. Hence, imposing lockdowns was a morally right
decision according to utilitarianism.
