The external intercostal muscle could help for more profound inspiration.
These muscles cover the eleven intercostal spaces on either side of the ribs but from the
outer side, unlike internal intercostal muscles. When interior and exterior intercostal muscles
combine, the spaces between the ribs are filled, thus providing support to the respiratory system.
External intercostal expand and raise the sternum by expanding the thoracic cage. During forced
inspiration, the muscles grow the ribs, thus causing an increase in the anteroposterior and
transversal diameter of the lungs. Consequently, the intrapleural pressure decreases, thus
expanding the lungs to permit air to enter the lungs. Therefore, the external intercostal muscle will
be of more help than the other muscle, which can only facilitate expiration.
Internal intercostal
This is a group of muscles found between the ribs, and their number is equivalent to the
intercostal spaces, which are eleven in number on each side of the ribs. Internal intercostal form
part of the thoracic wall muscles located in the intercostal spaces. These muscles share functions
with other muscles located in the intercostal spaces. Therefore, together with innermost and
external intercostals assist breathing and support the thoracic cage integrity. When the internal
intercostal depress the ribs, the thoracic cavity diameter shrinks due to forced expiration; thus, the
air is pushed out of the lungs. On the other hand, external intercostal back up this function by
raising the ribs. Internal intercostal muscles are the most important during the singing and normal
speech since they force air out through the nose and mouth.

Transversus thoracis
This is a tendon and thin band of muscle emanating at the sternum from the surface of the
lower posterior and is supplied with blood from the intercostal arteries both anterior and posterior
(Satoru 557). Transversus thoracis forms an essential accessory of respiration since its action
causes the ribs to contract, thus supporting expiration.
External oblique
External oblique muscles are located on the anterior and lateral abdominal parts. This is
one of the outermost muscles of the abdomen that stretches from the lower part of the ribs to the
pelvis (Hamilton 529). External oblique muscle causes an increase in intra-abdominal pressure by
compressing the abdominal cavity and pulling the chest cavity downwards. This action of the
muscles helps perform contralateral rotation and side bending and laterally and anteriorly flexing
the trunk. External oblique muscles also assist during expiration by contracting the ribs.
