Internet Networking Basics
Several components, such as computers, routers, firewalls, and switches, make up a
network. Either cables or wireless signals connect these devices. Internet networking basics help
us build an effective wireless network in an organization, community, or neighborhood
(Commotion Wireless., n.d). The relationship between clients and servers on a network is pretty
vital. Servers are computers that hold content and services such as websites and media files. On
the other hand, clients are different computers such as your laptop or mobile phone, which
request to view, download, or utilize the content. IP addresses are also critical components of a
network. IP addresses help computers identify the origins and destinations of data sent across a
network. There can either be public or private IP addresses- the former can be accessed
anywhere on the internet, whereas the latter cannot and are mostly hidden behind a public IP
address device. Network hubs, routers, firewalls, and switches are other internet networking
components. Computers are connected with the use of cables, and this creates a network

Cloud Networking
This is a type of IT infrastructure where some or all of an organization's network
resources are stored within a public or private cloud platform (Vmware, n.d). They are either
housed within the organization or by a service provider and are provided on demand. Companies
can either have a private, public, or hybrid cloud with cloud networking resources. Examples of
these resources include virtual routers, firewalls, and network management software. Today,
many businesses are turning to the cloud because of its benefits. It saves costs, improves IT

security, offers flexibility, ensures faster disaster recovery, among many other benefits. Cloud
networking has helped organizations address their regional expansions and increasing
infrastructure needs. Cloud networks allow for communication with virtual private networks
(VPNs) and also external computers.
Cloud Services
Cloud-based services are IT resources given over the internet. They can come through
public, private, and hybrid clouds. Hybrid clouds combine public and private clouds (Team Cleo,
n.d). Cloud service providers provide these services so that their customers, such as
BallotOnline, can access and use them at any time. Numerous cloud-based services are classified
according to their functions, such as project management. The following are a few examples of
these services;
i. Asana: this service enables employees within an organization to organize and trail
communication on projects more effectively. This service allows employees to view the
workflow of a project and the company's goals, enabling them to collaborate to ensure
they stay in progress (Team Cleo, n.d).
ii. Trello: it enables a user to get a visual overview of what is being worked on, who is
working on it, and whether that particular thing is in the process. It helps in project
management and does not require complex tools.
iii. Epicor: this service provides user and application support, backup, and disaster recovery.
It allows for the customization of services to improve productivity.
iv. Sage Business Cloud People: this is tailored for big companies such as BallotOnline, and
it gives the HR team insight into the company's global workforce.

CLOUD TRENDS, BEST PRACTICES, AND MIGRATION
Trends in cloud migration
The following are some of the trends that are influencing cloud migration and adoption.
Let us see what they are all about and how they may influence BallotOnline’s move to the cloud;
i. Going private and not public: for years, organizations have been pouring large volumes
of their data into public clouds. However, not everything should stay on the public cloud
since anyone can access this data, exposing it to security risks (Robb, 2021). Therefore,
some of these organizations are migrating some or all of their data to private clouds.
Since BallotOnline deals with sensitive data, it should rely more on private clouds,
offering better security services, unlike public clouds.
ii. Cautions on cloud migration: when the cloud gained popularity in its early days, cloud
service providers insisted that moving to the cloud was a much cheaper option. This is
not the case today. There are many charges involved and getting data back from the cloud
is not cheap and the process can be pretty slow (Robb, 2021). Therefore, companies are
becoming more reluctant to dump all of their data into the cloud. BallotOnline should be
cautious and ensure that it has extensive conversations with its CSP regarding the cost of
migration and all other hidden charges that may be involved.
iii. Security before, during, and after migration: there are several applications being
developed specifically for the cloud. These apps make it possible to get data to the cloud.
Sometimes, security issues may arise especially at the end of the development cycle or
when migration is about to occur (Robb, 2021). When this happens, the data being
migrated to the cloud is at a risk of security breaches. Therefore, companies like
