Research on My Family
Introduction
I have chosen to use the Sanchez family depicted in the film: “My Family, Mi Familia” by
Gregory Nava for this assignment. My Family is an exciting narration regarding a Mexican
immigrant family in the United States. The story cuts across two generations and showcases all
their social struggles (Teach With Movies).

The Sanchez family is made up of Jose, Maria, and their children. Paco is the eldest son of
Jose and Maria, and Irene is the oldest daughter. Other family members include Jimmy and Isabel,
Toni, Memo, and Chucho. According to this family, being a family means sacrificing for those
you love and striving your best to retain one's culture. The first generation in my family does their
best to uphold their Mexican culture, while the second generation struggles to enforce the culture.
Unfortunately, the third generation gives up the struggle to maintain the family's traditions.

Description
Jose travels for a year from Mexico to Los Angeles, where he has a relative, a journey that takes
him one year. The relative was born in Los Angeles when it was still a part of Mexico. When Jose
Sanchez crosses over to the Anglo neighborhoods to work as a gardener, he meets Maria, who is
working as a nanny. The two fall in love and get married. However, after giving birth to their first
two children, Maria is deported back to Mexico among ten thousand other Mexican-Americans.
Nonetheless, Maria fights her way back to her family with her third child in her arms. The family
is comprised of Paco, Irene, Toni, who becomes a nun, Memo, whose interest is to enroll in law
school, Chucho, whose attraction is in the street life, and Jimmy, whose late birth comes as a
surprise.
With time, the children grow and choose different paths in life. Chucho becomes a gang
member and loses his life as a result. Little Jimmy is scarred for several years after seeing his
brother die. Toni eventually becomes a nun and travels to South America. However, he becomes
political and returns home to present his family with a huge surprise. Memo becomes a lawyer and
marries from the Anglo neighborhoods. In one incident, Toni, who became an activist in Los
Angeles, is concerned about the fate of a young woman from El Salvador who faces the risk of
deportation and death following her family's politics. Toni persuades Jimmy to marry her and
rescue her from deportation, and he does.
With time, the young generation starts forgetting their culture and adopting other cultures.
For instance, Isabel asks Jimmy to join her in Latin dance. At first, Jimmy is reluctant and
embarrassed to join her because the dance is different. The performance happens on the street in
front of Jimmy's house, and the neighbors are watching. When Jimmy eventually joins in the
dance, someone stares at Jimmy and Isabel dancing, causing Jimmy to lose his temper.
