Reflecting with Peer Reviews: Social-Emotional Learning
The two articles emphasize the importance of social-emotional learning and its value to
learners' success. Today, schools admit learners from diverse backgrounds. Immediately these
schools introduce the learners to social-emotional skills such as listening skills, emotion and
impulse control skills, working and playing well with peers. It all starts as a simple task of
guiding the learners on how to be socially and emotionally stable. The learners begin to learn
how to associate and behave when playing or doing anything with their peers. At the same
time, they know how to manage various crises early enough.
The early years of social-emotional skills learning is a viable investment. The dividends of
such an investment include academic success and proper relations with workers when the
children finally join any firm or organization as employees. These skills are applicable
throughout the learners’ life. Therefore, the teachers and parents can constantly monitor what
the children do regarding social skills, emotional stability, problem-solving, decision-making,
flexibility, communication skills, perseverance and resilience, and empathy. These skills will
always guide them to be the people everyone desires to be around and work with.
Questions
1. When can an individual be described as socially and emotionally competent?
2. Can social-emotional skills be affected when one finds themselves in an environment
where everyone does things differently?
