This week I had an exciting opportunity to provide care for adult patients. The most
exciting aspect while caring for adults is their patients and understanding of nature. In most
cases, the patients were keen to understand their medical conditions, and they were more than
willing to follow through with the care plan. However, this week I experienced a challenge due
to conflicting religious beliefs. A patient was brought to the hospital without his consent since
her children believed he needed medical attention, but she was adamant since her faith does not
allow conventional methods such as hospitalization. Such a case was unique since nurses have to
respect patients' autonomy. Therefore, we had to start with patient education and help the patient
understand the importance of adopting conventional treatment options. Also, it was important for
the patient's family to acknowledge that informed refusal and informed consent critical in
improving the quality of healthcare.
In this case, the patient was a 72 years old native American female complaining of
frequent tremors usually starting in the left hand and fingers when at rest. Also, the patient had
developed slow movement, which made simple tasks difficult. Upon assessment, her muscle was
rigid and stiff, and she had a stooped posture had a decreased ability to perform unconscious
movements such as smiling, blinking, and swinging her arms.
First, DaTscan was done in addition to MRI, PET, and ultrasound to help rule out other
conditions. The patient was referred to a neurologist to diagnose the condition based on the
patient's medical records, review the symptoms and signs, and conduct a physical and
neurological examination. The neurologist established that the condition was due to Parkinson's
