For Whom the Bell Tolls
Pilar is wife to Pablo, the guerilla leader. She is ugly as she states and marvels at how it is
possible for men to be attracted to her. One of the significance of her life is that she feels she
should have been a man. “I would have made a good man, but I am all woman and all ugly.” She
states. The feelings are significant in that they explain why she is at the location. Unlike Maria
who has no choice, she would have stayed behind and waited for her husband. However, she
chooses to follow and fight alongside men in a course she believes in. The action of leaving and
fighting in a war at a time when it was not common among women makes her sentiments that she
would have made a good man true.
The story is on the attack that they had on a camp when Pablo was in charge. Despite the lack of
formal training, they schemed and attacked a camp. The attack had far reaching effects. It was a
learning moment and shaped their lives. Indeed, it may one of the reasons why they were in the
war. Pablo was the leader at the time of the attack and remained the leader of a guerilla. The
attack on the camp acted to boost his morale and the confidence of his troops. It is also here that
we learn that Pilar was alongside fighting with her husband. Further, it explains that they were
fighting with a specific cause which is to gain some territory. Pablo has confidence in Pilar as the
wife. We see him asking her to hold his pistol despite the knowledge that she does not know how
to use it.
Robert was in the war with a mission. He wanted to blow the bridge. However, the task needed
help from the guerilla. In the course of his work, he needed to know the people around him. it
was necessary to know who he could trust. As a result, he needed Pilar to tell her story. He
figured that if she told her story, he could reach to a conclusion on whether to trust her or not.
