Listening Styles
Listening is one of the skills that a person has to possess based on the numerous
advantages of human life. The different environment creates the need to implement different
listening styles to achieve successful communication. In an environment where employees of a
particular organization are being instructed on operating other machines in the company. The
employees have to listen carefully to understand every step of the process required to handle the
machines as their instructor stares at them. Failure to listen carefully might lead to consequences
where one might use the machine correctly, leading to accidents that affect the company. Thus
listening skills are an essential factor in most human activities. Relationships created among
different people are also based on the effectiveness of listening skills that involved parties
possess. Connections between two or more parties are strengthened as appropriate listening
styles are used as they interact. To achieve success in whatever activity a person is involved in,
the right listening style should be implemented, creating an understanding of the situation.
Four listening styles collaborate to create effective communication under different
circumstances. The first listening style is empathic listening. This is a listening style that
involves taking a close interest in the message spoken by a person. A connection is created
between the listener and the speaker where the listener dives into the speaker’s feelings and
thoughts to understand the situation better. A relationship is created where the emotion of the
two parties match depending on the situation. Empathic listening enables a person to understand
and relate to the speaker’s feelings. He can best comfort the speaker in the most appropriate way,
such as providing advice that gives hope to the speaker (Kelly, 2019). Listeners employing
empathic listening should be careful when communicating to avoid over-empathizing with the
other person hence losing control of the situation.
