American Democracy
Democracy gets defined as a system of government in which power rests in the people
who exercise it in terms of choosing the leaders to govern them through popular vote by
participating in elections. This system is vital in ensuring that leaders are accountable for their
actions, which makes them cautious about their actions and act in the interest of their subjects as
they govern based on the consent of the governed. American democracy is a representative
democracy in which the government gets elected by the citizens that they govern as provided in
the preamble of the U. S Constitution (National Archives, n. d.). The theory of democratic
government is meant to ensure that there is equality among the people against one another
without any of them experiencing or showing subordination against the other. This paper seeks
to discuss the characteristics of American Democracy and how it differs from the theory of
democratic government.
Characteristics of American Democracy
There are several characteristics of American Democracy including, civil liberties, which
are the limitations to the power of the government that are aimed at protecting the freedoms that
the governments are legally not allowed to intrude on; Elected representatives, which means that
the leaders that represent the people have to be elected by those they govern; Independent
Judiciary which is the ability of the judicial arm of the government to make decisions
independently without interference from any other arm of government; organized opposition
party in that the American Democracy is that there must be an opposition party or parties for the
democracy to function effectively; the rule of law which is the influence of the law on the
American society in which it ensures that the principles of supremacy of laws, equality,
accountability, and fairness are adhered to (Sidlow & Henschen, 2016). These characteristics are
