Summary
This project has discussed about the cart-pendulum system in depth. It has
discussed the dependence of damping in cart-pendulum system on various
input parameters, like, cart and pendulum masses, cart and pendulum
damping, pendulum length, and spring stiffness.
This project has also mentioned a combination of different input
parameters to design a high damping cart-pendulum system.
Introduction
A pendulum is a weight that is suspended from any string and is free to
rotate about a fixed point. However, the phenomenon it represents is more
interesting than a pendulum itself. The motion of a pendulum is called the
oscillatory, where an object moves back and forth about an equilibrium position.
A pendulum finds many uses in everyday life, like in time measurement, etc.
It can also be used to devise yet another system capable of converting the
rotational motion of the pendulum to translational motion, and vice-versa. One
such system is known as a pendulum-cart system.
One of the most famous applications of such systems is in segwey and
unicycle (essentially an inverted cart-pendulum system is used), where the vehicle
moves forward in the direction the pendulum rotates.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand the working of cart-
pendulum systems by designing a realistic, yet simple, cart-pendulum and
simulate its behaviour for different input parameters.
The goal is to design and simulate:
(i) a cart-pendulum system whose oscillations die down through damping as
quickly as possible.
(ii) a cart-pendulum system whose oscillations remain small and more or less
constant throughout the oscillation time.
