Nurses should always be careful not to impose their values on patients. This can affect their health
progress when receiving treatment and their self-determination. Before assisting patients, nurses should
understand their beliefs and values. Lack of self-awareness can lead to difficulties and greatly affect a
patient's progress.
Imposing values means trying to directly influence a client's feelings, attitudes, beliefs, judgments, and
behaviors. This happens when one does not understand their values. This could be done by providing
direct statements that affect a patient's course of action or nonverbally by looking away when a patient
says what a nurse may disagree with.
Self-awareness entails possessing a comprehensive comprehension of one's values, behaviors, feelings,
and attitudes and identifying when reactions to a patient's actions or statements result in negative
feelings.
Methods used to avoid the negative feelings include assessing personal values and gaining awareness of
personal biases and values. This helps develop an increased understanding of self-awareness thus
mitigating a nurse's chances of unknowingly imposing their values on patients.
There are times sharing a patient's values can help in therapy since they feel understood and accepted.
But one should not be compelled to share their values to show this. When values conflict, nurses should
remain as neutral as possible. They may relate to gender roles and some may seem unrealistic but it is
vital to remain neutral. This is done by listening and acknowledging the patient's statements without
bias or judgment.

An ethical issue recently encountered is equity in accessing resources. This is a major issue since health
facilities have few resources despite the large population that needs health care education. It is a
problem that should be dealt with since it means a large population is still uneducated on strategies to
ensure healthy living. The health resources are mainly concentrated in secondary and tertiary facilities,
alienating primary and preventive care facilities.
The ethical decision-making process used involves developing and implementing strategies that ensure
most people benefit while utilizing available resources effectively. The process entails concentrating on
impacts for determining those who were to receive the education. The process is correlated to
utilitarianism which analyzes the impacts of actions on previous or future gains to the majority of people
or society while ensuring effectiveness. Health care systems, like society, have limited resources and

they should be utilized effectively. This impacts the decisions on choosing the target groups that should
receive education on health promotion strategies by assessing a utilitarian basis instead of needs. It is
essential to ensure the strategies used do not harm, offend, or disturb certain groups. They should
adhere to various concerns regarding causing harm, privacy, and autonomy.

Gordon's Functional Health Patterns can be used to develop a complete database of a patient's
information. The categories within the framework allow for a standardized and systematic technique to
collect data and allow nurses to determine various aspects of human and health functions to plan the
appropriate treatment.
The functional health patterns assessed include health perception and management which ensures the
data gathered concentrates on a patient's perceived level of well-being and health and the activities
they engage in to maintain their health. Habits considered harmful to one's health are assessed and
issues relating to health and safety management are determined. An analysis is also done on one's food
and fluid consumption patterns and measured against their metabolic requirements. One's
adequateness of nutrient supplies is also assessed. Issues related to tissue integrity, fluid balances, and
body defenses are determined. Issues in the gastrointestinal system are also identified.
An analysis is also done on one's ability to understand and apply information and the sensory processes.
Information relating to neurological processes is gathered to help in the procedure. Sensory experiences
like abnormal sensory input and pain are determined and assessed.
The health screening intervention that I regularly participate in is alcohol screening and brief
intervention. This helps identify and offer assistance to those undergoing alcohol abuse. It entails
various questions to determine a patient's drinking habits. The steps include asking the patient about
their drinking using a screening instrument like US Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). If
they state they drink more than the levels shown on the instrument, I talk to the patient about the
advantages and disadvantages of their consumption of alcohol. I proceed to provide options on whether
they may want to quit, reduce, get help, or continue with their current habits. The outcome of the
discussions will help determine a plan.

When children are unsure about the emotional stability of their parents they undergo emotional trauma
and this develops as they become older. This may result in them perpetuating the trend in adulthood by
being attracted to those who perpetuate their earlier exposure to chaos.
A lack of unconditional love may exist in dysfunctional families. Love is only shown when certain
conditions are met. This results in symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other disorders related to
trauma.
Families that have undergone some form of trauma have a higher chance of having more people
engaging in drug or alcohol abuse. This prevents parents who are abusing from fostering a safe, stable,
and loving environment for others. Families which have multiple abusers result in increased levels of
instability. Alcohol and drug abuse is a complicated problem that is correlated to childhood
abandonment or rejection, unhealthy relations between the child and parent, and traumatic
experiences, and can be considered a pattern that is constant within the family.
Such occurrences inhibit a child's trust in others and themselves as they grow. They may encounter
issues in their education, relationships, and personal identities. Those within such families try to justify
their behaviors as normal and the more they normalize the bad traits the more the chances of
misinterpretation and harboring negative self-perceptions.

The facility provides mitigation and treatment strategies to people and families that have a high risk of
or are impacted by alcohol abuse and correlated issues. This also includes informing the public about
health and the negative effects of alcohol abuse. Various communities are also supported in their
initiatives to mitigate alcohol abuse and encourage effective responses by society.
The facility encourages initiatives for assessing and the provision of therapy for harmful consumption
including the early identification and handling of excessive drinking among expectant women and those
of the child-bearing age. It also provides mitigation strategies and treatment for co-morbid issues and
alcohol-use and induced disorders. This includes treatment and support for those affected and their
families.
The Health Leads program would work in the facility since it would allow those within low-income
communities to get the required non-medical needs that are integral to their recovery from alcohol
abuse. The program would help connect those affected with the resources they need to ensure they
remain alcohol-free. Professionals can provide cheaper ways of getting resources like food,
supplements, and communities that encourage alcohol abstinence. This would allow the facility to
develop its capacity to implement models that focus on the social determinants of health and create
initiatives to mentor others to possess the same commitment and ability to create improved models.
