Reflect on your previous readings regarding morality. Then consider the scenario below and answer the questions
that follow.
Larry is an accountant assistant for a small firm. He is a good worker and has a good relationship with the owner of
the accounting firm. He is only four courses away from earning his Bachelor's degree in accounting, which he will
need to get a promotion. Larry's boss has offered to let Larry use his mountain cabin for the upcoming holiday. Larry
loves taking his family there because they can go boating, fishing, and hiking, and he knows they could all use the
time away from the daily grind. However, Larry has a paper due for his class in four days and he knows he will not be
able to complete this on time if he decides to go to the cabin. Larry decides that he will tell his instructor that he is sick
with the flu to see if he can get an extension on his paper. He then starts packing his suitcase.
Questions
How does this student’s behavior counter academic integrity?
Why is it important for educational institutions such as Ashford University to hold students accountable for
their actions?
What are some possible consequences for this student if the instructor learns the truth?
Your initial response should be 150-200 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3. Respond to at least two of
your classmates’ posts by Monday, Day 7. (You must create one initial post and at least two responses, for a
minimum of three posts for this discussion.)
It is always hard to bypass fun for work, but sometimes you just have to. The
academic integrity is in question for Larry. He knows what he is responsible for and
he knows that if he goes on the trip he will not complete his assignment. Requesting
the extension under false pretences is wrong. If the professor was to find this out,
Larry could receive a zero on the assignment. He is showing a true lack in integrity
by choosing to do this.
It is important for schools to uphold a strong academic integrity policy because
without it the school will dwindle in the number of students. The loss of faith in the
school will begin to show. If the school is not respected because they are not
following policy when it comes to right and wrong, current and future students will
not do so either.
If the professor learns of the true scheme that Larry is trying to pull there could be
great consequences. He could receive a zero on the assignment and it would drag
down his grade. Even worse they could possible do an academic suspension for
falsifying the reasoning behind his needed extension. Long term this may also
cause this student not to be trusted in regards to future assignments.
