Addiction

The dataset chosen for the project is the scenario 4 dataset called as addiction dataset. My

focus in Psychology is about addiction which is a chronic disorder with biological,

psychological, social and environmental factors affecting its development and maintenance

("Addiction | Psychology Today," n.d.). Addiction involves the use of substances such as

alcohol, inhalants, nicotine and other behaviors such as gambling. These substances intensely

activate brain pathways of reward and reinforcement which is generally accompanied by mental

health conditions such as depression and anxiety problems ("Addictions," n.d.). The given

project involved testing the effectiveness of a drug called Antaquil which is believed to moderate

the symptom of alcohol withdrawal with minimum side effects.

Scenario

It includes Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS) score of 36 individuals being

divided equally into treatment and placebo group. The scenario measures the effect of a new

drug called Antaquil. In order to test the effectiveness of the new drug, 18 individuals were given

the Antaquil drug, and another 18 individuals were administered a placebo. The OCDS scale was

used to measure thoughts about alcohol during nondrinking periods. The score ranged from 0 to

40 with a higher score on the OCSDS scale indicated a higher level of rumination about alcohol.

Using the dataset, it would help in answering the effectiveness of a new drug called Antaquil.

Thus, if the drug is effective, it means it can be given to the whole population who is suffering

from alcohol addictions.
