Is Sherry Turkle a technological determinist?
Digital transformations in society today have created unique precedence in our daily
lives. Social media networks and other technologies, such as mobile phones, Skype, and
FaceTime, have created efficient conversation and reconnection with people. Alone Together, a
short story by Sherry Turkle expands the idea of new technologies as she examines the
connection between technology and mortal beings. In life on the Screen, Sherry Turkle explores
the personal computer, taking into consideration the computer technology changes and its impact
on individual culture. Today, technologies have significantly changed, and computers have
played a significant role in communication through email, chatgroups, multi-user domain, and so
forth (Bolter, 1997). Both Alone Together and Life on the Screen, Sherry Turkle highlights that
the advancement in social media, virtual realities, and the all-pervasive internet have impacted
both our culture and lives.
In a world with advancements in technology, both mortal and immortal beings have been
created to form individual connections. As mentioned in Alone Together, one way to be
connected with others is by been intimate with others by the use of robots and human beings
since robots draw humans closer. Robots have today served as a way to form a connection with
individuals without the need for intimacy (Sherry, 1999, Pg. 272). While people may fail one
another, robots are alternatives used to comfort human being's needs. The intervention of robots
has created a feeling in which human beings need to be intimately personal with others. Robots,
however, are considered to be safe and predictable as compared to human beings as they only
express themselves the way they were created.
Dealing with robots is much easier compared to humans, and they do not share their ideas
with others as humans do. Today, robots have widely been used across different sectors, either in
