to Rome and How Their Reigns Led to the Decline of the Roman Republic
Similarities Between the Two Leaders
Augustus and Julius Caesar shared several similarities, even though Augustus was Julius’
adoptive son. Both emperors assumed power amid political turmoil in the Roman Republic. The
family enjoyed favorable and strong political ties, albeit lacking resources and money until
Julius’ successful political career began to take off. The other similarities between both leaders
were that they knew how to please their citizenship, often through propaganda, enticing the
people with promises of change (Forsythe 2005). For this reason, both men seemed to enjoy
favor from their citizenship during their respective reigns.
The Major Differences Between the Two Leaders
However, despite these similarities, both reigns had distinct differences, which
contributed, in one way or the other, to the decline of the Roman Republic. The most significant
and consequential difference is the fact that Julius Caesar started his political career from ruins.
He picked up the remnants of his family’s former glory and power in an attempt to revive it.
Julius went through the treacherous path of advancing his political career through conquest and
warfare (Forsythe 2005). Augustus, on the other hand, was more privileged compared to his
adoptive father, starting from the top because of his adoptive father’s volition. While Julius ruled
over a divided and war-torn country, Augustus implemented major reform, steering clear of too
much conflict. Through his reign, Augustus made a point to reduce the size of the Republic’s
Senate, making them pay attention to consequential reforms that altered the way the government
functions, creating new positions in the process. Julius was obsessed with power and leadership,
