Africa Episode 7: The Rise of Nationalism
Documentary Summary
The documentary, The Rise of Nationalism, hosted by Basil Davidson, is about African
history before, during, and after the slave trade and colonial period to modern times. I serve the
purpose of educating individuals interested in African and African History. Through the
documentary, a person learns how Africans had their civilizations, kingdoms, trades, and values
before the colonists could invade their territories. Part of a documentary series looks at the myths
and the realities and history of the entire Africa continent. It examines the significant
independence challenges, starting with the Gold Coast and the nationalist leader, Kwame
Nkrumah’s initiative (Davidson, 2016). In the documentary, Ghanas story makes the larger part
of it.
The struggles in Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Algeria, the tragedy of the Belgian Congo,
and the attempts by Kenyatta, Nelson Mandela and Nyerere for African unity are highlighted in
the film. Closely, Basil Davidson reviews the independent state of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and
South Africa. Further, the film focuses on Ghanas Kwame Nkrumahs vision of Pan-
Africanism, which had not gained significant influence and acceptance like nationalism
(Davidson, 2016). It examines the situation of Guinea-Bissau, where the nation started to rely on
communist aid after it was denied assistance from the West. When Mozambiques President,
Samora Machel, gets interviewed, he states the role of FRELIMO and the liberation Soldiers in
the independence of Mozambique from Portugal (Davidson, 2016). The film also considers and
explores the last breakdown of the white minority in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and turns to
South Africa and its apartheid to inquire how long this final bastion of the white governance can
survive.
