Question Two:
1. My eighth grade teacher had a special policy: whenever someone's phone rang
during class, he would make us take the call and put the caller on speaker mode
for everyone to hear. Over the school year, some students exposed calls from
their parents, grandparents, and one student even received a call from her doctor
regarding a pregnancy test. The teacher apologized to the girl after the call but
this made me think more deeply about the policy. At the time, I could not
understand this policy. It seemed not only embarrassing and odd to publicize our
personal matters but it also appeared as a violation of our privacy.
Through the culture of school, I did understand cellphones were restricted in
certain circumstances because it could cause interruptions in classroom focus
and learning. The teacher's policy was a product of this culture. Due to this
strong cultural belief, the policy was not likely going away anytime soon.
Additionally, it made sense for students to demonstrate the negative
consequences through publicizing the call so others do not learn from them, thus
creating an environment more “suitable” to learning.
To avoid punishment, I began to adapt to this policy. I began with classroom
socialization where I observed the behavior of others and spoke to others to
learn how they avoid punishment. This led me to adopt new behaviors such as
shutting down my cell phone before class to avoid the awkward situation of it
going off and facing the consequences. Through recognizing the myth of the
school as having a negative view towards cell phone use, I will further limit my
cell phone use on school grounds, perhaps restricting my use primarily for
emergency calls and related situations.
2. A new girl recently joined our bible study group. One time when we were in line
to get food, a tall girl from our club suddenly reached for the new girl`s clothes
and pulled them over the new girl's shoulders, greatly startling her. I stood behind
them and watched in shock. The tall girl simply responded with, “I don't want you
to get a cold.” At that time, it did not make sense for the tall girl to semi-attack the
new girl. Why could not the tall girl have asked her if she was cold?
Through socializing with the tall girl, I learned that the tall girl was the leader of
the group. It made more sense why she had done what she did: she was the
leader and felt a sense to uphold the values of the group which included dressing
conservatively. In the split of a second, her concern was to have the new girl
resemble the values and beliefs of the club. The tall girl`s position in the club is
like her men`s hut: she is responsible for management and takes on a top
responsibility in the club. She is also perceived by the club to uphold the beliefs

and views of the club so her action can be justified. Here, I may criticize that she
did not perceive the emotions of the new girl from her actions.
Later, I spoke with the new girl who brought up the issue. Although she held the
same religious beliefs as the club, she explained that she dressed the way she
did because she was a model and it made more sense for her to explore her
sense of fashion. Indeed, the foundations of the beliefs of the club, which were
based on the Bible, never stated the exact ways of dress code, but the club
adopted their own image of an organizational culture and myths.
Socializing with both the new girl and tall girl helped me understand the motives
behind their actions and choices. To avoid odd situations like this in the future, I
will seek to learn of the cultures and beliefs of both the people and an
organization before taking action. I will also engage in socialization with the
organization to understand to a greater degree, their rituals, expectations, and
normalities before acting in situations that would compromise their culture.
3. Growing up, I was told to pick an instrument to play. It did not matter which one
but the important part was that I had to be very good at playing it. Playing an
instrument did not make sense to me because I did not enjoy playing
instruments, no one needed an instrument to survive, and from my limited
understanding of the careers of musicians, if one did not become famous, they
would not have a significant career. So I rejected this idea.
However, over time through socializing with friends and teachers at school, I saw
that playing an instrument was favorably looked upon in society. Additionally, my
advisor had told me the myth that students who played an instrument tend to
have greater acceptances into more advanced educational programs and
opportunities. Like my parents once told me, playing an instrument would give
me an advantage in my development, but I never understood why. When I further
socialized with a friend in high school who played the piano, I further understood
the cognitive, physical, and emotional benefits of playing an instrument. I began
to envy others who played an instrument.
I realized I had relied on my own perception too much, having dismissed
something before fully understanding and exploring the matter. In the future, I will
seek to understand ideas and suggestions from others with a well-researched
and holistic viewpoint rather than dismissing them. The myth of the educational
system is that excelling in extracurriculars and other activities outside of
academics makes up for a successful student and this is the reason why so
many students pursue these activities. This myth creates action which leads to
the competitive culture in school. I will use my understanding that every
organization has a myth and specific culture to craft my actions towards excelling
in the organization moving forward instead of relying on my own perceptions.
