EDSE 150 01 Final Reflection This course on special education has given me more knowledge about the importance that programs in special ed have on the success of a wide range of students. Over the course of this semester, I have gained a more holistic understanding of SpEd, as well as fostered my enthusiasm for working with this population of individuals in the future. In my initial reflection on special education, I present a very simplistic understanding. While I still agree with the emphasis I placed on having quality SpEd services, throughout this essay I will show that I have developed a more nuanced and well-informed conception of special education. Children with exceptionalities “differ from the norm to such an extent that they require an individualized program of special education and related services to fully benefit from education” (Heward et al., 2022, p. 3). The first step in being able to help these children is to identify them. The process for receiving special education and related services starts with an evaluation of the child and then eligibility is assessed. If the child is deemed eligible, an IEP will be created for them and services will be provided. When assessing a child, it is important to take an ecological approach because it collects data about how a child behaves and functions in different environments, thus creating a more holistic interpretation.
