Introduction
General concepts of family define it as two parents or a happily married couple of
heterosexual husband and wife who raise their children together. But in the current decade, the
number of single-parent families is increasing rapidly because of different reasons such as
divorce, premarital sex, etc. According to the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family
Statistics Forum in 2006, 30% of children belonged to a single-parent family. In the majority of
single-parent families, mothers are the primary caretakers of the family. Family is a dynamic
social unit that affects the life of its members directly or indirectly (Smith, 2017). The article
titled "The future of Children" by Amato argues that the future of children exposed to their
parents’ toxic relationships or separations is more likely to suffer from mental depression than
those living in nuclear family systems with both of their parents. Amato's research for the article
also reveals that most children born to single mothers come in undesirable environments (Smith,
2017).
i. Impact on Children’s Cognitive Development
Studies reveal that the impact of single-parent families on children's cognitive
development is higher, leading to other impairments. Single-parents often fight with insufficient
income and poor health hygiene problems that affect the children's well-being and cause loss of
confidence. While living in a single-parent family, children face compromises at numerous
points in their lives – and the most significant compromise is to have half love and compassion
compared to children living in nuclear families. Single-parent families are linked with poverty,
minor social status, less income, inferior parenting role, and worse mental health. All these are
the byproducts of single-parent families that children have to face at every cost. Sometimes, the
