How should healthcare professionals proactively plan to update their knowledge and skills
to respond to the major public health issues and challenges facing them and their clients?
With the accelerating developments in technologies and techniques especially in the 21st
century, healthcare professionals are faced with the need to continually update their knowledge
and skills. Major health crises such as the recent Covid-19 have further shown the importance of
healthcare professionals updating their knowledge and skills in order to respond to such crises
even in the future. Besides, given the challenges that often face healthcare professionals and their
clients, continuing professional development and team training have been identified as two of the
many ways by which healthcare professionals can proactively update their knowledge and skills.
Healthcare professionals should plan to engage in continuing professional development
so as to keep their knowledge and skills up-to-date. Continuing professional development (CPD)
is a form of lifelong learning that enable health care professionals to maintain and improve the
knowledge and skills that are needed in the delivery of professional services that enables them to
respond to major health crises as well as challenges facing them and their clients. Continuing
professional development may be mandated by some professional organizations through formal
or informal education to aid healthcare professionals to maintain their licensure while also
maintaining competent practice (Mlambo, Silén & McGrath, 2021). This way, healthcare
professionals are able to provide high-quality services that safeguard the public as well as meet
the needs and expectations of clients. Continuing professional development ensures that health
professional remains relevant and up to date such that they become aware of the changing trends
and directions in the line of their profession. In relation to this, continuing professional
development is a means for healthcare professionals to proactively plan and update their
knowledge and skills.
In addition to that, healthcare professionals should plan to engage in team training so as
to enable them to be highly effective in delivering higher quality and safe care. Team-based
training intentions may include processes that optimize coordination, communication, and
cooperation. As a result, healthcare professionals will be able to establish a proactive approach to
the development of team-based care (Rydenfält, Odenrick & Larsson, 2017). Team-based care
reduces preventable harm to patients and also enables healthcare professionals to come together
collaboratively in sharing information regarding the means by which they can respond to major
health issues. For example, the recent Covid-19 made it clear the need for healthcare
professionals to come together collaboratively and find means by which they can deliver high-
quality care to patients and also respond to the crisis. In relation to this, team-based training is,
therefore, a means by which healthcare professionals update their knowledge and skills.
In conclusion, it is indeed important that healthcare professionals constantly update their
knowledge and skills for them to respond to major health crises as challenges facing them and
their patients. One of the ways in which healthcare professionals can update their knowledge and
skills is through continuing professional development which is a form of lifelong learning that
enables them to remain as relevant as possible. Another way is by engaging in team training
which also optimizes their skills and knowledge.
