STRUCTURALISM AND CONTEXT 2
1. What is the range of signs presented?
Signs that relay a message can vary from a simple sketch, realistic pictures and demonstrations
of the actual object described without being seen. It may also involve acting out during
communication to pass a message when there is a language barrier. Looking at a situation also
gives a sign of what is happening without using words.
2. What is the relation between words and signs?
The terms word and sign can be used interchangeably. A sign can be used to relay a message
about an object when this object is not in sight.
3. What is the signifier and the signified?
The signifier is the actual word or sign describing an object that is not right being seen at the
moment, in this case, a cow. On the other hand, the signified is the concept of the object that is
being referenced.
4. What is FDS’s “world-changing” claim?
FDS claims that there is zero connection between the signifier and the signified. There is nothing
in the word COW that necessarily corresponds with the four-legged creature (actual animal) in
the example of a cow.
5. What is the origin of language on the account that FDS is challenging?
FDS is challenging the theory that language must have started with a lot of pointing, grunting,
and maiming things until language became more sophisticated. The sophistication process was
guided by people creating words that directly corresponded to what they were trying to describe.
