Developing Students’ Conversational Skills with the Help of Movies,
Videos, and Songs.
Part 1: Goal and instructional analysis
Instructional Goal
Students will develop and practice listening and speaking skills by communicating in
varied informal contexts through practical activities based on resources such as movies,
videos, and songs.
Goal Analysis
To accomplish this skill, students to have be exposed to and immersed in informal
conversational contexts through the use of resources such as movies, videos, and songs.
This will make students more flexible with their use of diction and language, they will know
when it is appropriate to use slang or formal language, they will be aware of different types of
metaphors used to describe an event or situation (i.e. this place is a pigsty!) and they will
understand what the conversation they are having is about.
Type of Learning
The type of learning in this instructional analysis is mostly verbal information and as
students are required to pay attention to the way diction is used in conversation, when or
when not to use certain words, when it is suitable to use slang or colloquial language and
learn how to apply all the conversational skills obtained. Intellectual skills are also required for
this instructional analysis since students need to know what circumstances would allow to
use a certain form of language (i.e. formal, informal, semi-formal) and when the appropriate
time to use said language is.
