here is more information to take from and help answer the role
Thank you for taking time to consider my experience and qualifications supporting an application for the
above very interesting opportunity to bring together my diverse skills and contribute to your current team.
I believe I will meet all of your requirements. My resume outlines a broad background across private and
local government sectors. Here I would like to address the specific skills and capabilities as detailed in the
position description.
My reputation for displaying the highest integrity in all activities has been demonstrated in my professional
life and as a NSW State League Referee where the correct decision must be made on the spot and on the
run. Similarly, in my role with Penrith City Council where I interact and negotiate constantly with our
customers, I have to properly and sensitively resolve issues without reference to my Manager unless the
problem requires a second opinion or an issue needs to be escalated. There are times when I have to draw
on my ability to maintain self-control in the face of aggressive behaviour but I am fortunate in that I have
the maturity and confidence to handle the most difficult situations.
Often, I have been faced with issues and situations with customers who do not understand the complexities
of the legislation affecting decision making. Over time, I have acquired a comprehensive understanding of
the Local Government legislative frameworks and compliance regulations and am able to guide people
through the decision making process, and help them understand the reasons for a recommendation or
conclusion.
My aim always is to achieve a satisfactory result for both our customer and Council. In helping people from
many backgrounds I must also be aware constantly of sensitivities around cultural differences within the
broader community. In this I am fortunate in that I have very good communication skills. My view is that
good communication begins with careful listening to ensure I have understood the issue and can respond
appropriately. Similarly, I have prepared written responses to inquiries both internal and external and am
confident in my ability to make myself clear in appropriate language and style.
I would like to expand on my reasons for believing that I meet your requirements by responding to the
specific questions as outlined below.
1. What appeals to you about a role in ASIS? Or in what way do your values align with the values of
ASIS and our mission?

I have a very organised and methodical approach to life and work well within a regulated environment such
as my current role within Local Council. However, I also enjoy the unexpected and having to reprioritize my
plans for the day because a more pressing issue has presented. Working for ASIS offers, I believe, that
element of the unpredictable when no two days would be alike. More importantly, a role with ASIS would
be a good “fit” with my strong interest and commitment to law enforcement, helping other people, being
proactive in my involvement with the community, providing protection and social justice. Helping my
colleagues in their work and supporting the development of individuals and groups to reach their potential
and live in a secure environment.
A considerable part of my working life has been in construction. Interestingly, research has shown that
construction workers have been shown to have extremely high levels of problem solving skills and cognitive
flexibility. Changing plans, ideas and approaches to problem solving and able to quickly adapt to changing
circumstances, being open to new concepts and possibilities and not getting stuck in routines. Traits that, I
believe, would help me fit well into your team and be able to adapt and adjust to constant information
flows.
Keeping track of various lines of observation and research and ensuring that accurate records are
maintained and reported appeals to my orderly and organised mind.
2. Discuss two influential experiences from your resume which you think make you a strong candidate
for an Intelligence Officer. Why did you select these two experiences?
The first instance that I think indicate my potential aptitude for a role as an Intelligence Officer was being
asked to act in a position of greater responsibilities as a team leader. I was relatively young and
inexperienced at that stage and was initially surprised at being given the role which required me to operate
independently out in the field overseeing general works such as concreting and road maintenance projects
and supervising teams of labourers and machinery operators. My role included scoping projects, resolving
on-the-job issues, signing off on work completed by contractors and schedule resources as required. I
managed that acting role for 12 months and gained a tremendous amount of self- confidence in my ability
to achieve required outcomes on time and within budgets. Before that and in a similar vein, I was called on
to take on the role as Acting Assistant Coordinator managing the Supply Store. Again, I was surprised at
being given the additional responsibility but thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.
I learnt that I could work well with older, more experienced colleagues and interact with a diverse range of
internal and external stakeholders. I was also able to develop my leadership and management skills while
responding to constantly changing demands and scheduling tasks as priorities altered. I learnt on the job
and learnt quickly, accepting advice and suggestions and encouraged my colleagues to provide feedback on
my performance. I learnt not to be overly concerned if I made a mistake, but learnt from it. My approach
was (and is) to get the job done and get it done well.
3. Describe your most rewarding professional achievement. What did you learn from this
achievement?
