Background
There are increased cases of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) that result from poor
hand hygiene (HH) that have been regarded as being some of the leading health problems among
the various health care workers (HCWs), and this is mostly due to the shortage of nurses ans
nurses burnout. It will be noted that numerous reports have managed to develop the statics that
indicates that poor hand hygiene compliance (HHC) when it comes to the HCWs have resulted
from various factors that include lack of sufficient nurses, lack of enough facilities that include
sinks and dispensers, insufficient education, distractions, wrong perceptions and unaccountability
among many others.
It is indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO) that at least two million people
across the United States have been confirmed to having HAIs, thus paving the way to a
significant number of 60 to 90 deaths annually (Carter, Pouch & Larson, 2014). In the same
regard, HH has been identified and eventually accepted as the essential strategy that can be
implemented to prevent HAIs in a grand move that is meant to reduce the costs. Human and
other resources are required for treatment purposes.
At the same time, HHC ratings when it comes to the health sectors that include the
emergency departments (EDs) have continued deteriorating based on the fact that most of the
HCWs tend to find themselves being one of the reasons as to why compliance with the required
standards has continued being in decline, another reason is the nursing shortage that the
continuously being face all over the world. A recent study has demonstrated that only around
30% of the HCWs have managed to comply with the standards when it comes to the HH
(Pugliese, Gosnell, Bartley, et al., 2010). It is based on such information that it becomes
