(Lemmen, Fristedt, & Lundqvist, 2013). As such, it is essential for healthcare providers and the
government to support this evidence-based practice by equipping both nurses and patients with
proper education about the approach. Patient’s education is important because Kangaroo care
aids in the infant stabilization and the parent confidence. Jackie & Zsohar (2013) explain that
busy physicians mainly find it challenging to offer proper patient teaching in the present
healthcare climate. Accordingly, inappropriate nurse and patient education result in poor
utilization of the Kangaroo care model, which deteriorates health services and put patients and
infants at risk.
It is apparent that the full benefits associated with the Kangaroo care have not been
explored because of inappropriate knowledge and skills, which have resulted in, deprived patient
care (Lemmen, Fristedt, & Lundqvist, 2013). Most nurses lack exposure to the clinical learning
environment and therefore poor skills and knowledge while educating patients. Consequently,
ineffective communication has also translated to the misunderstanding between patients and
health professionals resulting in inappropriate education.
Nurse competencies depend on the knowledge and skill learned from training. Thus, the
former and the latter enable the health professional to provide appropriate patient care. However,
education for nurses and patient care is affected by issues such as improper treatment,
discrimination, deficient practical skills, and knowledge as well as lack of readiness.
Accordingly, nurses encounter some problems during the clinical learning environment as well
as during their interaction with the patient. Furthermore, most nurses lack adequate knowledge of
the best approach to apply to provide effective kangaroo care. Consequently, deficiency in
practical skills is an issue that impacts on the nursing outcome.
