Michael Omi's "In Living Color: Race and American Culture"
SUMMARY
Omi's article tackled how black people are treated in society compared to how white individuals
are treated. According to Omi's article, people of different color or racial backgrounds are
deemed to be "less than" white people because of no particular reason other than skin color
(Omni 630). The media has also played a considerable part in reflecting these people's stories
and who they really are. Social media and other forms of media show these characters of
different racial backgrounds and how they are restricted of their only way to live. The crucial
cycle of American culture revealed ethnic stereotypes and how society views ethnic minorities
because of how they are portrayed in television, movies, music, and sports. Media is one of the
most powerful tools that can influence people, and how the media presented ethnic minorities
significantly impacted people's thinking (Omni 625, 630). For instance, in the 1930s, African-
Americans and white people were divided into different schools. From there, people were able to
know how much Black people were prejudiced.
THESIS
Media plays a significant role in racism and influences other people's beliefs.

Examine the three model's clothes and shoes: What are the lifestyles of each person?
Where are they going in these outfits? Who would get the furthest in their choice of shoes?
What is the implication of gender? What is the message about race?
Answer: The woman in the middle of the advertisement is wearing a polo and a blazer,
symbolizing that she may be a businesswoman or an executive for a company. The man on the
right looks like he just did a workout, and maybe he is an athletic person. The woman on the
right side is wearing a green dress and, in my own opinion, looks like an employee. The way the
characters were dressed come off as controversial to me because of how they were represented.
First of all, the girl in the green dress is black, and the way they dressed her up is as an employee
or somebody who has a lower position in a company. It's just my observation, and I think the
advertisement presented many stereotypes. The woman in the middle looks like she was trying to
grab the walnuts in front of her. Not only that, she is wearing a pair of inappropriate shoes that
did not match the rest of her outfit. I don't think this has a sexual meaning to it. I think it just
signifies that she is trying to reach for her dreams and goals. To me, that comes off as sexist
because not only women reach for their dreams. Why does the advertisement have to highlight
that women are the only ones who struggle? Are they deemed to be less capable? Lastly, the man
in the advertisement looks like he is living the best of his life. It's probably what society thinks
and sees. Why do women have to work twice as hard as men just to be successful? And why
does a black woman have to be an employee and not a manager or a CEO? Clearly, the makers
of the advertisement were trying to send a message.

Who is the most relaxed in this scene? Why? What is the message about gender and race?
