CONCEPTS OF COHESION AND COHERENCE 2
Paragraph 1
Which rule is broken? Cohesion
Rewrite the paragraph here:
The amount of moisture in the air increases due to climate change, the highest point of
which occurs during hurricane season. There is extra moisture in the air, which leads to
conditions that can create more powerful and destructive storms. Hurricane Irma had the
strongest sustained winds ever recorded in a hurricane. Hurricane Harvey was supposed to be a
500-year storm.
How does this new version adhere to the rule, and why is it clearer?
The rewritten version of paragraph 1 adheres to the rule of coherence through an apparent
flow of information. Immediately we can tell that the entire paragraph’s subject matter is intent
on explaining the phenomenon of hurricanes, their duration, and their carnage. Through flow, the
newer version of this particular paragraph creates a flow from the known facts about hurricanes,
which the reader probably understands, then progresses to actual examples after establishing
grounds for new information.
Paragraph 2
Which rule is broken? Passive verb use and flow
Rewrite the paragraph here:
The slated Robert E. Lee statue was to be moved at a later date, but the white
supremacists had been organizing attacks in Charlottesville to keep the confederate statue in the
park.
How does this new version adhere to the rule, and why is it clearer? Through a
reconstruction of the sentence, the passive verb use is absent and used in describing the Robert E.
