Benchmark - Supply Chain Integration at Amazon
Introduction
Amazon is a popular global company founded by Jeff Bezos in 1995. The company
started in Jeff's home garage in Seattle, Washington. Currently, Amazon runs branches within
the United States and in many other regions across the globe (Griswold, 2018). Amazon is highly
recognized for fast timely shipping services where customers enjoy up to same-day delivery in
particular regions. The company engages in careful planning and external recruitment to
accomplish this objective and to keep pace with the changes in customer preferences.
Sales and Operations Planning in Supply Chain Integration
Sales and operations planning has significant effects on supply chain integration,
especially in sustaining the equilibrium between the market demand and organizational needs
(Jacobs & Chase, 2014). Failure to sustain this equilibrium will lead to non-satisfactory customer
services, problems with cash flow, reduced sales, and unfulfilled organizational objectives.
Forecasting enables Amazon to predict shifts in market demand and make the necessary
changes. Additionally, Amazon can predict consumer needs and adjust for changes by raising
workflow, staffing, and inventory using medium and long-term forecasting. Forecast information
will enable the company to consider the benefits accompanying these changes and their impacts
on its supply chain.
Amazon's supply chain, warehouse locations, and delivery method were carefully
identified to sustain its competitiveness in the industry. The company invested $1.2 billion in the
establishment of a new fulfillment station to achieve this objective (Gilmore, 2016).
Furthermore, twenty of Amazon's cargo planes were acquired through leasing to lower shipping
costs that were initially paid to DHL shipping company.
