Medical Records Procedures
Handling of medical records is one of the most delicate and important elements of
healthcare practice. A healthcare worker need to apply specific procedures while handling the
medical records either on paper or electronically. A healthcare worker should abide by the
confidentiality laws and ethical principles that seeks to protect the medical information of every
patient. Abiding with these regulations requires the health worker to protect the contents of the
medical records (Biedermann & Olson, 2015). In cases where there is a need to share the
information with other health workers or hospitals, the consent of the patient be obtained before
any action is taken. The healthcare workers can only share patient’s medical records in specific
occasions. One is to coordinate and facilitate a patient’s treatment and the other is to obtain
payment for doctors and hospitals for the services granted. In case there is a need to dispose the
medical records, the health worker should do so by shredding, burning, pulverizing or pulping.
Handling medical records with high levels of confidentiality helps with protecting the
patient’s information from being used and accessed by people who are not authorized to do so.
Also, it helps create a safe and trusting environment where the patients feel respected and
encouraged to seek medical and be as honest as possible during a healthcare visit (Biedermann &
Olson, 2015).
