Ways in which REI can Satisfy one of the Needs in the Three-Needs Theory
McClelland’s three theories of need; affiliation, power, and achievement, helps to explain
the motivation process by describing what and how needs should be approached. He realized that
despite the diversity of people, they possessed any of the three needs and is driven by them. Of
the three theories, the work environment at REI could satisfy the affiliation need. The need urges
an individual to have a social and interpersonal relationship with others. Also, individuals seek to
perform their work in groups and they create a friendly and lasting relationship and other people
tend to like them. The environment at REI satisfies affiliation since individuals are allowed to
have a social and interpersonal relationship with their colleagues and also in the community
through engagement in the outdoor activities
How the Outdoor-oriented Benefits Offered at REI apply to Expectancy Theory
Expectancy theory proposes that a person will behave or act in a particular manner since
they are motivated to choose a particular behavior over others because of the expected result of
the chooses behavior (Lambright, 2010). According to the theorist, Vroom, the expectancy
theory focused on leadership and motivation within an organization. The behavior selection
motivation is affected by the outcome suitability (Rybnicek, 2019). The expectancy theory could
be applied to the outdoor-oriented benefits through its instrumentality, valence, and expectancy
elements. Valence involves beliefs about the desirability of the outcome. Valence therefore
would result in inherent since the employees have engaged in outdoor activities meant to build
the society.
Expectancy as described is a belief that increased effort is likely to yield better
performance. About expectancy, the employees have different expectations about their job that
involves the ability to engage and perform the most pleasing things during the outdoor activities.
The motivation force of a worker can be calculated through the formula; valence+
instrumentality +expectancy=motivation.
What REI could do to Improve how they Motivate their Employees
Motivating employees does not require much to send a positive message. A simple act
like praising the team members for the work well done may have a significant impact on the
morale of the employees. Undoubtingly, REI is working hard to motivate its employees.
However, to improve the way it motivates its employees, the company can offer them various
opportunities such as educational and career development. Usually, many employees are driven
by professional and personal development. Therefore, such an opportunity can help them
experience their potential as well as performance in the workplace. Another strategy that REI can
use is to offer the senior and long-term employees a share of the stock of the company. Such
strategies will boost the morale of the employees and make them feel they are part of the
business and it will also play a significant role in enhancing their performance.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Hiring Employees at REI who Might not be as outdoor-
oriented as other Employees
There are various advantages of hiring a worker at REI who does not engage with
outdoor activities. Among them is the challenge of motivation and diversity strategy given to the
company. In every organization, the director has to recognize the motivating factors of the
employees to ensure they ally with motivation strategies which help to ensure that the diverse
employees are accommodated. In REI, the disadvantage may be that some of the employees may
insight others against outdoor-oriented motivation strategy. It may therefore create discord
between the organization's management and the workers. To ensure that every employee is
