Discussion (Chapter 9)
1. Discuss the correspondences between the ER model constructs and the relational
model constructs.
ER model is a model that represents data in both abstract and conceptual ways. It is often
used in database modeling. Often time, ER model is also used in reducing the complexity of the
database schema and in producing a semantic data model within a system. On the other hand, in
a relational schema, the relationship types are showcased by two types of attributes namely
primary key and foreign key (Elmasri & Navathe, 2015). Diagrams created using the ER model
are called ER diagrams or entity-relationship diagrams. These models are used in the first stage
of information system design under requirement analysis to help in documenting and describing
the information needs or rather the type of data or information that will be stored in the database
system.
Correspondence between ER and Relational Models:

Relational Model
ER model has both entity and relationship
among its entities.
The relational model generally has entities that
consist of attributes. The relationship is created
through foreign keys.
In ER model, all binary 1:1 or 1: N relationship
type is denoted by a line connecting line.
The relationship between two entities is
represented by the foreign key. In other words,
the relationship relation is composed of two
foreign keys each of which represents the
