Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) have become the de-facto standard for laying out and formatting
websites. How, in general, did designers specify complex layouts prior to CSS? What
characteristics of CSS makes it an compelling mechanism for website layout?
My experience in development of web pages prior to CSS was to use HTML. This created issues
when content needed changing as styles would become broken. Some other languages could
help with style creation such as languages like Perl or CGI, but that just made things more
complex and difficult. What was need was a way to style pages without fear of that style
becoming corrupt. Basically, web pages are nothing more than online desktop publishing. Rather
than using MS-Publisher or PageMaker to make printable pages, what was needed was a way to
do the same as those programs which used a cascade of different pieces of information to style
the page. This is what the CSS does, but it goes much further in that it is for style only, and the
content is kept separate. What makes this so wonderful and what I like is that the style can
change completely without ever touching the HTML code. Why this is important is could be for
seasonal pages. For example, If your site is a store of some sort, and Halloween is over. If your
site has CSS for Halloween theme all it takes is a to change the name of the css file. If the
HTML calls theme.css. The halloween.css file was copied and renamed as theme.css, so the
halloween.css still exist. A simple copy, paste of the xmas.css file and renaming the copy of the
xmas.css file to theme.css will load the Christmas themed pages. It is really amazing. The best
example to find where this takes place is at csszengarden.com.
