Factors that Affect Fertility
Male infertility can be caused by inadequate sperm production, sperm health, and/or
scarring that prohibits sperm to pass through (Fainberg & Kashanian, 2019). These factors can be
a result of an infection, which causes inflammation and impaired sperm function in the body.
There are different types of infections that can cause this issue, which include sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs). STDs can commonly only bacterial or viral but both types can play
a role in infertility. The STDs can cause an infection in the male reproductive tract, causing
damage to structures and subsequently, sperm. For example, chlamydia, the most common STD
in the United States, can result in genetic damage to sperm in men (Fainberg & Kashanian,
2019). Similarly, other types of infections, such as UTIs, can cause prostatitis, which can
ultimately result in sperm damage as well in men.
Additional causes that contribute to infertility in men include non-pathogenic related
issues including diabetes, injuries to the testicle, thyroid problems, chromosome defects, and
hyperprolactinemia (Holt et al., 2016). These different issues can all affect the sperm formation
in the testicles. Improper sperm formation, such as abnormally shaped or low counts, can
contribute to male infertility. Unfortunately, all of the causes stated can lead to this improper
sperm formation, potentially causing infertility in men (Holt et al., 2016).
Why Inflammatory Markers Rise in STD/PID
In patients with an STD or PID (pelvic inflammatory disease), inflammatory markers rise
due to the presence of an infection caused by a pathogenic organism (Magri et al., 2019). When
the pathogenic organism is present, the body initiates an immune response to help attack the
organism. This subsequently increases inflammatory markers in the body. For example, in
patients with an STD or PID, the C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory marker that is
