judgment test used for selection into initial teacher training. International Journal of
Educational Psychology, 3(2), 104-124.
The authors: Klassen, Durksen, and Patterson conducted this study to evaluate the applicant
feedbacks to the use of situational judgment test (SJT) as a selection procedure for the primary
and secondary teacher training programs in the United Kingdom. This was based on the need for
reliable, accurate, and evidence-based methods used by teacher training providers in the selection
of potential teachers. The study focused on the applicant’s perception of the fairness and
relevance of the SJTs use during the selection for entry into teachers’ training. All the applicants
did a 35-item SJT, a scenario-based valuation method aimed at assessing personal judgment in
contextualized workplace environments.
The study sample comprised 304 applicants. These were prospective teacher trainees seeking
entry into Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programs. 73% of the applicants were female, and 27%
were male. Out of these, 157 candidates were seeking entry into primary ITT programs, while
147 were applying for admission into secondary ITT courses in the UK higher learning
institutions. Most (97%) of these recognized themselves as white and did not have any infirmity
(92%). The average age of the applicants was 20.4 years.
All the participants were involved in personal and team interviews, a written exam, and a
mathematics abilities test. The following assessment involved participation in the SJT pilot
interview. The SJT comprised 35-item situational judgment questions. After the SJT, the
applicants were required to respond to a feedback form consisting of 3 content-related scenarios
and 4 questions regarding the application of SJTs as a selection technique.
