DISCUSSION QUESTION 2
Assessing and Treating Patients with Anxiety Disorders
Introduction
Everyone has experienced a feeling of anxiety that is part of life, and it's expected among
us at one point or another. It usually arises whenever one has problems accomplishing his/her
tasks or even when experiencing issues with the tasks you are doing. Students typically feel
anxiety mostly when they are about to sit of a test or before making a significant decision that
may change your life. Anxiety is a normal emotional feeling: the brain's reaction to stress and
alerting you if approaching danger. According to a specialist, the occasional feeling of anxiety is
ok. At times, it results in anxiety disorders, a collective noun for a group of mental illnesses that
causes constant and overwhelming feelings of anxiety and fear.
Excessive anxiety can make one avoid doing his work, going to school, getting together
with family members, or other forms of social interactions that may worsen the situation. This
paper focuses on a case of a 46-year-old white male who works at a steel fabrication company as
a welder. The patient had an episode while at work which forced him to be rushed to the PCP
after feeling like he was going through a heart attack. The patient complained of tightness in the
chest, shortness of breath, and a sense of impending doom that made him feel like running away.
The patient says that he has occasionally been using ETOH to fight his worries at work
and has also been taking 3-4 bottles of beer every night. He complains that his superiors at work
are harsh, which makes him fear for his job. According to the patient's mental status exam, he is
alert and aware of every event happening at each place, time, and the people involved. He is also
well dressed and with clear speech. His effect is blunted, and he denies any forms of
hallucinations, delusions, or paranoia. He has a clear judgment and denies any suicidal thoughts.
According to the results, the patient is diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder.
