THE IMPACT OF CHRONIC WORKPLACE STRESS TO EMPLOYEES 2
The impact of Chronic Work Stress on employees
Introduction
Stress is part of everyone's life, and it always reaches a point in life when one feels
frustrated, anxious or irritated due to the life demand or the workplace demands. It is always
normal to be stressed out, but the problem arises when the stress becomes chronic and compiles
for days and years without a solution being found. There are various sources of stress, but in this
era, it has been found out that workplace stress has been on the rise and this is turning into a
significant health epidemic, and the consequences that are always severe can be felt by both the
employee as well as the employer. A survey found globally by the U.S Steelcase Company out
that about 42% of employees described their workplace in negative and awkward adjectives
when told to describe their workplace using one adjective (Bakker et al., 2005).
Most of them used adjectives such as stressful and boring among others. Thus, this is
mainly because the same employees have other life stresses mostly regarding financial
challenges, relationships, and health-related issues. On top of these, the same employees go to
their workplace and find additional stress regarding unbearable work demands, tight deadlines,
uncertain job security as well as heavy workloads. Thus, this research paper is dedicated to
coming up with a broader understanding of workplace stress as well as giving several reasons
why chronic workplace stresses are on the rise in recent times. The article will also cover the
effects of chronic workplace stress on the employee as well as to the employer and the long-term
impact on the economy. Possible solutions to this challenge will also be proposed which the
employees, as well as the employer, can implement to ensure fatal consequences do not occur
(Ganster & Schaubroeck, 1991).
